Oil painting by Nora Dewey

Shot this photo of a briefly resting hawk in an oak tree at Santa Barbara's Douglas Family Preserve. The hawk was the original inspiration, but the curving oak branches became my favorite part of this painting.

  • I have lived in North County all of my life, and traveled up and down California. The California coast is my favorite place, and inspires me with its beautiful views and gentle light. Painting allows me to express this love, and I hope viewers will sense a similar emotion when viewing my work.
I paint mostly from photographs, as a camera best captures quickly changing scenes and light. Occasionally I will paint "en plein air", which sharpens my ability to accurately see color and helps me to concentrate on basic shapes and composition.
